Greetings Wonderful UWHEN Board Women,

Our fearless leader Shirlayne asked if I would forward the email below to you as she is in Morocco (and why am I sitting in Orem, Utah?!) without reliable email support. Shirlayne and I are both supportive of granting permission to Rebecca Thomas, a Ph.D student researching women’s perceptions of work-family enrichment experiences influencing higher education leadership culture, to conduct her dissertation research study with members of UWHEN (volunteers only.)

Would you please let Shirlayne know if you are supportive of sending a request for volunteers from Rebecca Thomas to your individual campus listserv  groups? Clearly we would let Rebecca know she would have to have any willing volunteers contact her as we do not share our institutional listservs with any outside groups. Once we hear from you we will let Rebecca know which institutions are willing to participate in disseminating her request.

Sending thanks for all the good work you do on your campuses and with the board. Best Thanksgiving wishes to all.

Kathie

Subject: Requesting Permission to Conduct Dissertation Research Study with Utah Women in Higher Education

Ms. Shirlayne Quayle

State Coordinator, Utah Women in Higher Education

Dear Ms. Quayle:

As a graduate learner at Capella University, I am requesting permission to conduct my dissertation research study with members of your state association of the American Council on Education (ACE) Women’s Network. My dissertation is titled “Exploring women’s perceptions of work-family enrichment experiences influencing higher education leadership culture: An exploratory qualitative inquiry” and is being carried out under the direction of my mentor, Dr. Marilyn Harris. For my research participants, I will be recruiting women working in U.S. higher education in administrative or academic positions who have children in the home under the age of 18.

The purpose of the study is to explore women’s perceptions of how their work-family enrichment experiences influence the higher education leadership culture.Work-family enrichment is the concept that an individual’s work and family roles benefit and improve one another. The primary activity will be collecting data by interviewing volunteer association members by telephone. I also request to provide materials promoting this research which would be distributed to your state association members to ask for their participation. These materials are provided for your review including the Informed Consent Form that each volunteering participant will need to sign and return to me.

This project has received initial approval from Capella University’s Institutional Review Board (IRB), which has reviewed my study and research plan to ensure adequate protection of participants. I am now seeking permission from select state associations to obtain full IRB approval. My anticipated start date for the research study is November 17, 2014, and I expect that data collection for this study will last no more than two months. Any data collected will be kept confidential. In accordance with Capella University policy and best practices for ethical research, neither participants nor sites will be identified in any report of my findings or in my published dissertation. I will provide a copy of the aggregate results from this study upon your request.

If you have any concerns about this request please contact me at the phone number listed below. If you are willing to grant permission for this research study, Capella University’s IRB requires this permission to be communicated in writing on the organization’s letterhead and signed by an authorized representative. I am providing a template for this site permission letter to assist you in creating this document.

Sincerely,

Rebecca Thomas
